Italian photographer Gabriele Galimberti’s project, Toy Stories, needs little introduction. Shot over the course of 18 months, the photographer took pictures of children from different countries around the world posing with their most prized possessions.  In some ways, words fail miserably to the pictures justice; they are both art and anthropological analysis, beautiful and heartbreaking.

Galimberti says her goal was to capture the diversity and universality of what it means to be a kid. Describing the children she photographed, she said: “At their age, they are pretty all much the same; they just want to play.”
