It was a funeral that would make an Egyptian Pharaoh proud, albeit occurring in Kenya's coastal region. An 86-year-old man was laid to rest in his home in Kilifi, with his belongings, just as he had wished in his will. Digging a bit deeper into his story, we later found that the bizarre burial ceremony revealed a man who led a very lonely life in his later years.
Man who left 14 children, buried A Kenyan man has been buried with his belongings in the country’s coastal region. 86-year-old Karisa Thoya Matembo was laid to rest in his home in Kilifi, with his belongings, just as he had wished in his will. At the ceremony, not a single person was allowed to cry, those caught weeping were chased away.
The deceased, who left 14 children and two wives apparently led a very lonely life in his later years. He lived by himself in his 4-bedromm semi-permanent house. Matembo reportedly lived alone after ordering his wives Kanze Ngala and Janet Kakala (deceased) to vacate his house after his children allegedly neglected him 15 years ago.
It seems the late Matembe wanted his funeral to be his final closure with his request to lock the house and bury the keys with him. The local elders were put off by the man’s unorthodox request.
