An alleged drunken driver smashed into a Palmdale, Cali. apartment early Sunday and killed a teenage girl sleeping in her bed, reports say.
Authorities arrested Roberto Rodriguez, 20, on suspicion of drunken driving. He was driving at about 80 mph, a witness told police, and lost control of his SUV.
He jumped the curb, smashed into Mendoza’s bedroom and killed her on impact.
Rodriguez was kept at the scene of the crash by some good Samaritans until authorities arrived, the television station reported. The driver reportedly lives across the street from the crash, witnesses said.
He must have missed his street, said Sgt. David Sauer of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to NBC Los Angeles hours after the crash.
“Maybe the driver realized, ‘oh, there was my turn,’ and turned too late,” Sauer said.
The surrounding apartment units were evacuated shortly after because of leaking fuel, the TV station reported.
The high school student’s friends are coming together for a candlelight vigil at the crash site outside Mendoza’s apartment at 8 p.m.
Rodriguez was taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries. He was then booked into Los Angeles County Jail after the crash on felony charges of manslaughter with a bail of $100,000.
