One of the aides of Nigeria’s Second Republic president, Alhaji Shehu Usman Shagari, has denied the rumour peddled by an online medium that the former president is dead.
The aide, Ibrahim Shehu Shagari, who is the former president’s personal secretary, said the rumour could be due to a mistaken identity as the former president is hale and hearty.
Speaking to our reporter when he visited Shagari’s residence for confirmation, a neighbour said there was nothing indicating that the respected former president was dead.
LEADERSHIP observed that normal activities were going on in his personal residence at Sama Road within Sokoto metropolis.
On the likely cause of the rumour, Ibrahim Shehu Shagari said he learnt that a boy named Shagari died some days ago in the metropolis and some persons probably mistook the identity of the boy for the former president and went to town with their unverified information.
Corroborating Ibrahim’s denial, Mallam Sani Umar, the senior special adviser on media to the Sokoto State governor, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, said no such information was conveyed to the governor.
Sani added that if something like that happened, the governor and others in the state would have been at the former president’s residence already.
