Chief Imam Of Ibadan Sheikh Baosari Haruna Dies At 93



The death has been announced of Sheikh Busari Suara Haruna III, the Chief Imam of Ibadan land.

Alhaji Ishaq Sanni, Chairman, Muslim Community of Oyo State confirmed the death of the Islamic scholar to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday morning in Ibadan.

Sanni explained that the deceased died after a brief illness in Ibadan at the age of 93.

He said that until his death, the cleric was the President-General, League of Imams and Alfas in South West, including Edo and Delta states.

According to him, the remains of Haruna would be buried in his Agbeni residence, Ibadan, at 3 p.m. after Janazah prayers at Oja’ba Central Mosque, Ibadan, on Thursday (April 9).

The late scholar was turbaned as the Chief Imam of Ibadan land in 1995.

Sanni also said the Islamic scholar would be greatly missed for his boldness and his leadership qualities.


In his condolence message, Alhaji Rasheed Adesokan, Balogun Mumini of Yorubaland, prayed that “May he (Haruna) be accepted into the company of the righteous by Allah and may Allah lengthens our own years in duniya, Amin!’’

Also reacting to the death, Alhaja Sururah Oyero, National Public Relations Officer of FOMWAN, prayed Allah to forgive and overlook his (Haruna) faults.

“I pray Allah to forgive his (Haruna) shortcomings, pardon his wrongs, accept his soul among the righteous and grant him Al-janah Firdaus, Amin!’’ she said.

On his part, the Imam of Bodija Islamic Centre, Ibadan, Alhaji Abdulhakeem Afuye, said he received the death of the Islamic leader with a rude shock as the deceased was expected to deliver a lecture at the centre by 3 p.m. (same time he would be buried) on Thursday.

“This is shocking. But as a Muslim, Inna lillahi wa’inna ilaihin rajiun! May Allah forgive his sins and reward him with Al-janah firdaus, Amin!,’’ Afuye prayed.

Similarly, Mr Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Chairman, Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria (MMPN), described the death of the late Chief Imam as sudden.

Balogun said that the deceased did not show any sign of distress during his last public outing last week.

“Baba still led the prayer for the nation last week as well as the Jumah worship at Oja’oba Central Mosque in Ibadan. May Allah accept his return and reward him with al-janah firdaus, Amin!’’

More condolences from Islamic societies, Islamic leaders and Ibadan titled holders were being received by the bereaved family in which the deceased was described as a righteous leader whose reign brought development to Islam in Ibadan land and South West region.

NAN also reports that Imams and Islamic scholars from all the states in South West have started arriving Ibadan for the burial of the late Chief Imam. (NAN)
