A man was left fighting for his life in hospital after being stabbed in broad daylight on a street in Hackney.
Police closed off Amhurst Road in both directions between Mare Street and Pembury Circus after they were called to reports of a man in the road with serious injuries.
The 21-year-old man was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital.
A 21-year-old man was arrested nearby in relation to the incident, on suspicion of GBH, and is currently in police custody.
Patrick Moule, 30, who lives in Hackey was on his way home from work when he saw the aftermath of the incident.
He told the Standard: "I came out of Hackney Central station at about 5.25pm, and came out the Amhurst Road side.
"The first thing I noticed was quite a lot of buses backed up, there were two or three paramedics in the middle of the road, and there were quite a lot of police.
"I started walking up towards Hackney Downs and there were several police vans and a lot of police cars, and police were moving people back away from the station, then police came running down the road putting on blue forensic gloves."
A spokeswoman for Scotland Yard described the victim's condition as "critical".
She said: “Police were called at 17.04 to reports of a man with serious injuries in Amhurst Road with the junction with Malpas Road.
"Officers and London Ambulance Service attended. The victim - aged in his 20s - was taken to an east London hospital. He had suffered a stab injury and his condition is critical. Officers from Islington CID are investigating.
"A 21-year-old man was arrested near the scene and was taken to an east London police Station.”
In an update at 9.30pm, police said the victim's condition was stable.
