How Misdiagnosis Led to Dora’s Death

When Mrs Dora Nkem Akunyili was the Zonal Secretary (South-east) of the Petroleum (Special) Trust Fund in 1998, Nigerian doctors gave her what many of her family members considered to be a health scare. They said she had a growth and needed surgery. Akunyili, then 44, decided to travel to the United States, first to get a second opinion and then undergo the prescribed surgery.

 The bill for the medical trip was $17,000, including $12,000 for the surgery. During pre-surgery check-up in the US, the doctors told her the Nigerian doctors had made a wrong diagnosis and that she did not need any surgery. It was said to be a minor issue that medication would solve.

The immediate past governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, who visited the late NAFDAC DG in India last month, has spoken of the professor’s wish for Nigeria before she passed on.

According to a statement, Mr Obi said: “On behalf of the Akunyili’s family, I wish to officially confirm the death of Prof. (Mrs.) Dora Nkem Akunyili, OFR, in a Specialist Cancer Hospital in India this morning at 10 am, Nigerian Time, after a two-year battle with cancer.”

Body Of High School Student Omotayo Adeoye Found By Police In New York’s Hudson River

Omotayo Adeoye was a brilliant student who attends one of New York City’s elite schools, the high school of Math, Science and Engineering in Manhattan. Sadly, her body was found floating in the Hudson River just a week short of a citywide police search for her.
Adeoye, 17, had committed suicide on May 29th by jumping off into the Hudson River near the George Washington Bridge Thursday afternoon. It came after the young student had been caught cheating on a difficult German Language exam by her teacher, Eva Malikova, at the elite school. Humiliated in front of her classmates, Adeoye immediately left the school building, but not before leaving behind a suicide note.
The short note, later found by school officials and police read, “I just want to go away forever on the bottom of the river.”

Mr. Bayero on January 19, 2013 survived an attack by gunmen believed to be members of the Boko Haram insurgent group.
The late Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, who died on Friday morning will be buried at 4:00 p.m. according to Islamic rites.
This was announced by Mahe Bashir, the Walin Kano.
Already, the Kano State governor, Musa Kwankwaso, who was in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, for a Governors Forum’ programme left the venue for Kano on Friday morning.
Born 83 years ago, on July 25, 1930, Mr. Bayero was appointed Emir on October 22, 1963. He was a former Nigerian ambassador to Senegal. His father, Abdullahi Bayero, also reigned as Emir for 27 years.

UK deports Nigerian woman seeking asylum in the UK over fears her daughters would be circumcised

32 year old Afusat Saliu (pictured right) has been deported from the UK after a campaign to keep her in the country failed. There was a campaign against her deportation on the grounds that her two daughters, 4 and 2 (pictured above) face the possibility of female genital mutilation in Nigeria.

Afusat had fled Nigeria in 2011, claiming her stepmother had threatened to circumcise her first daughter. She was pregnant again at the time and claimed she feared her second daughter would also be subjected to FGM.

This is the dramatic moment a young mother desperately tried to rescue her baby after a pushchair rolled into a river.

The unnamed woman is seen in the image, taken during the dragon boat race at the River Exe, Exeter Quay, Devon, dragging the pram to safety along with three quick-thinking passers-by who had also jumped in to help.

The child, believed to be a one-year-old girl who was strapped into the pushchair, is seen in the picture with her head above water and arms flailing either side to keep herself afloat.

Victor Martinez, 51, who lives in London, was one of the passers-by who leapt into action after seeing the buggy roll into the River Exe.

An angry father, Mike Udoma, on Monday, confessed before magistrate’s court sitting in Ejigbo, Lagos, western Nigeria, that his son, Macaulay was a thief and pleaded with the court to jail him accordingly.

The 24-year old Macaulay Udoma was arrested and charged before the court for stealing and was remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri.

According to his father,  Macaulay has been a terror in the family and there was no place one will keep money in the house that he would not find and steal it. “I have been wondering how he locates where there is money in the family house. No matter where you hide money, he will locate and steal it,” the senior Udoma revealed

Go To Polling Booths With Charms, Aregbesola Urges Voters As Isiaka Adeleke Formally Declares For APC [Photos]

Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, has tasked residents of the state to go to the polling booths on August 9, 2014 armed with charms and verses from the Quran and Bible.

The governor, who said this in Ikire on Tuesday during his campaign in the town, however, did not say what voters would use the charms and prayer verses for.

Speaking in Yoruba language, Aregbesola urged the people of the state to go out and cast their ballots and stay back until the result was announced to avoid rigging.

He described the Peoples Democratic Party as an assemblage of men who are promiscuous for asking young women to “dress to kill” while going to cast their ballots during the governorship poll.

The governor said, “Make sure you go to cast your ballots with everything. I am not saying you should go there with guns but the law does not frown against charms, verses from the Quran and psalms of the Bible.

MFM Bars Residents, Women in Trousers

The Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries has barred residents of host communities from passing through its Prayer City in Magboro.

The development has dimmed the hope of residents of the no fewer than 17 communities, whose access road was recently blocked, that the church may reopen the road.

Also, women in trousers, who have other business in the Prayer City, located at Magboro on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State, have been barred from passing through the camp ground.

The MFM had on Saturday, May 10, blocked the access road to Magboro, Magada, Makogi, Abule Odo and Unity Estate among other communities, a move the residents claimed was not only surprising, but was done without consultation with them.

2 Murderers Caught Having Sex in Fulton County Jail

A faulty lock at the Fulton County jail led to a brief romantic interlude for a death row prisoner and a female inmate, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
The incident took place in the medical wing at the jail last week, according to an official incident report obtained by the AJC.
