 BREAKING: Akinwuni Adesina reelected AfDB president

African Development Bank president, AFDB, Akinwumi Adesina, has been reelected. Adesina, who returned unopposed, formally requested for a second term as AfDB president, saying he was “doing it with an acute sense of duty and commitment. I do it to serve Africa and our bank, in an unbiased way, to the best of the abilities that God has given me.

” Adesina was cleared of controversial corruption charges after facing questions from a panel on the affairs of AfDB An independent panel of experts, headed by former Irish president Mary Robinson, has cleared the beleaguered leader of the African Bank of Development (AfDB) of corruption, according to a report obtained by AFP. 

PRESIDENT BUHARI CONGRATULATES NIGERIAN BORN KAYCEE MADU, APPOINTED MINISTER OF JUSTICE IN ALBERTA, CANADA

 President Muhammadu Buhari rejoices with Nigerian born Kaycee Madu, appointed Minister of Justice and Solicitor General for the Government of Alberta, in Canada.

Madu makes history as the first African born provincial Minister in Canadian history and is also the Provincial Secretary and Keeper of the Great Seal of the Province of Alberta.

President Buhari describes the honour as “landmark and historic,” saying it once again pedestals people of Nigerian descent as go-getters, who distinguish themselves in different walks of life.

The President says as the first Black Justice Minister and Solicitor-General in Canada, Madu has written himself into history books, and urges Nigerians, both at home and abroad, to remain good ambassadors of their country.

Nigerian-Born, Kaycee Madu, Appointed Canada’s Minister Of Justice

Nigerian-born, Kaycee Madu, has been appointed as Canada’s new minister of justice. Madu is also the first Black Man to occupy either Provincial or Federal Justice positions of the Justice Minister, Attorney General or Solicitor General in the country. 

According to report, Madu was born and raised in southeastern Nigeria. He graduated from the University of Lagos with a law degree in 2001. He and his wife moved to Canada in 2005. They have three children. Announcing his appointment, the MLA for Edmonton-South West and Minister of Justice and Solicitor General stated on his Twitter page; 

“Thank you, everyone, for all the well wishes. I am beyond humbled to accept my new role as Minister of Justice and Solicitor General – where I will pursue fairness, equality, and justice for all with every ounce of strength I have.”

More Nigerian medical practitioners may leave the country as the United Kingdom yesterday announced new ‘Health and Care Visa’ policy to attract the best talents in Nigeria and other parts of the world.

The country, which has since the outbreak of COVID-19 stopped the issuance of visa, opened the migration window for care professionals, social workers and their families, to bolster its National Health Service (NHS).

The new visa policy aims to make it cheaper, quicker and easier for healthcare professionals to come to go to the UK, beginning in August.

 A large number of doctors are set to exit Nigeria once the ban on international flights is lifted this week, The PUNCH has learnt.

This is just as The PUNCH observed from data provided by the United Kingdom’s Medical Council that the number of Nigerian doctors migrating to the UK increased by almost 100 between July and August despite the restriction on international flights.

Recall that the Nigeria Immigration Service had in July prevented 58 Nigerian doctors from migrating to the UK because they didn’t have visas.

It was, however, learnt that following the re-opening of the British High Commission a month ago, many of these doctors had obtained visas and had left even though the restriction on international flights had not been lifted.

International flights will resume in the country on Saturday.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has warned against the use of Malaysian banned cosmetics identified as Sifu Kunyit Day Cream, Sifu Kunyit Night Cream and JJ Skincare Glowhite Night Cream.

Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of the agency, in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, these banned products were found to contain hydroquinone, tretinoin, betamethasone valerate and mercury which could cause change to skin pigmentation, damage to the kidney and increase the risk of skin cancer and they have been banned by the Malaysian Ministry of Health.

According to prof Adeyeye, Sifu Kunyit Night cream contains mercury and betamethasone 17-valerate, Sifu Kunyit Day Cream contains hydroquinone, tretinoin and betamethasone 17-valerate, while JJ Skincare Glowhite Night cream contains hydroquinone.

According to the love doctor, who was represented by his legal advises, Tunde Ednut is an illegal immigrant in the United States, whose Visa has since expired.

Joro Olumofin is seeking justice for an alleged publication made on him by the blogger, whom he accused of publishing false reports on his activities on social media.

The National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Sani Aliyu, disclosed this while speaking at the media briefing of the PTF in Abuja today Monday, August 24.

Mali Coup: Junta Wants 3-Year Military Rule, Agrees To Free President Keita


The junta that seized power in Mali wants a military-led transitional body to rule for three years and has agreed to release ousted president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, a source in a visiting West African delegation said Sunday.

"The junta has affirmed that it wants a three-year transition to review the foundations of the Malian state. This transition will be directed by a body led by a soldier, who will also be head of state," a source in the ECOWAS delegation in capital Bamako told AFP.

"The government will also be predominantly composed of soldiers" under the junta's proposal, the source said on condition of anonymity.

The source added that the junta has agreed to "free president Keita", who has been detained along with other political leaders since the coup on Tuesday, and he "will be able to return to his home" in Bamako.

"And if he wants to travel abroad for treatment, that is not a problem," the ECOWAS source said.

Police nabs woman who threw her newborn baby in a pit toilet

Police officers in Anambra state have arrested a woman who killed her newborn son by throwing him into a pit toilet.

Franca Udokwu, 30, from Obuba Obofia Nkpor Community in Idemili North LGA of Anambra State, was arrested on August 22 by police operatives attached to Ogidi Division following a tip-off. 

Upon interrogation, the suspect led police detectives to the pit toilet inside her house where she dumped her baby.

The baby was recovered and taken to Iyi- Enu Mission Hospital for medical attention but was confirmed dead on arrival by a medical doctor.

Mali Coup: Jonathan, Other West African Leaders Arrive In Bamako

 

West African leaders arrived in Mali on Saturday to try to push for a speedy return to civilian rule after a military coup in the troubled nation.


The delegation, headed by former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan, planning to meet members of the new junta as well as ousted president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

Rebel soldiers seized Keita and other leaders after a mutiny on Tuesday, dealing another deep blow to a country already struggling with a brutal Islamist insurgency and widespread public discontent over its government.
