Nubian Skin4

Most would agree that the fashion world puts pale skin in a ubiquitous position. From cosmetics to haute couture, ideas of beauty lean heavily towards Eurocentricism. A new UK-based ladies' underwear brand has joined the movement that wants to change all of that

The creation of the ‘white’ look as the norm has, over many years, resulted in many cosmetic concerns that plague black people the world over. Corrosive chemicals for straightening afros and skin-lightening creams are but a few of these.
For a long time, the fashion and beauty industries have catered for a white clientele, instilling whiteness as a ‘standard’ to be attained. The usage of the word ‘nude’ to describe a colour that closely fashions itself on European skin has further instilled this into the minds of consumers. Major skincare brands like Dove have been chastised for implying that pale skin is normal, even though many “dark skin”-ned people use its products.

Nubian Skin, a growing UK-based undergarment brand is working to challenge such notions. The one year-old brand is launching a line of lingerie that matches the wide range of skin tones of women of colour. It might not be big news for some people but one can that it would be for women of African descent.
Following in the heeled footsteps of fashion mogul and former supermodel Iman, who acknowledged that part of the idea behind her makeup line comes from the challenges she faced early in her modelling career to find products that matched her skin tone, the brand has taken on the duty of providing light to dark brown-skinned African women with realistic nude options that reflect the diversity of shades along the skin tone spectrum.
In their blog, the founders of the brand express the reason behind the “revolution” they are a part of: Embedded image permalink
It’s an uphill battle, but every revolution starts somewhere.  Looking at the makeup industry, it took Eunice W. Johnson to create Fashion Fair Cosmetics in 1973 for black women to really have an adequate choice in finding makeup colours to suit them.  In the 1990s and 2000s, mainstream brands began to realise the value of providing to women of colour, and despite the billions we spend on make up each year, there are still brands that have chosen not to provide an offering for us.
So for you beautiful black and brown women, next time you need a nude pair of hold-ups or maybe a nude strapless bra to go under than stunning white halter dress, we’re only a few clicks away.  Nubian Skin. A Different Kind of Nude.
