Stampede: Jittery Shoppers Sprint For The Exits Amid Shouts Of 'Bomb, Bomb!' After Collapsing SIGN Sparks Terrifying Shopping Centre Panic

The noise led to a stampede as people abandoned their food and made for the exit
Hundreds of terrified shoppers ran screaming from a packed shopping centre this afternoon after a bomb scare.

There were scenes of chaos at Bluewater Shopping Centre in Kent after a menu display board fell down in the dining area, sparking cries of 'bomb.'

People were heard shouting 'run' before hoards of people made for the emergency exit in a state of panic.

The menu board toppled over in the Winter Garden dining area around 2pm this afternoon.

It led to a stampede as people abandoned their food and made for the exit.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing children in tears and people claiming to have 'heard gunshots' or a firework within the centre.

Isobel Morrice wrote on Twitter: 'Just ran for my life out of Bluewater cause people were running and screaming towards the exits. No idea what was going on.'

Simon Dominic Hibbs added: 'My wife just called from #bluewater, heading to our car and mentioned something about shooting. Everyone be safe, but be careful. Could be a mistake, fireworks are a thing right now. Please don't take unnecessary risks. More people can be hurt by the panic than the incident.'
George James Sellick tweeted: 'False alarm or not. Having hundreds of people running towards you panicking and screaming was extremely terrifying! Thank goodness it was just not real! #Bluewater #StayAlert'

Another Twitter user said: 'Bluewater was just crazy. People screaming and shouting at everyone to get out. People trampling on others to get out of doors. Get away from the building.'
A police spokesperson told Kent Live there was 'nothing to worry about' and the centre has now reopened as normal.
Bluewater later tweeted: 'A false alarm was caused by the noise of a menu board falling over in the Wintergarden earlier this afternoon.

'Bluewater remains open as usual.'
