With water hyacinths spreading across the Lagos State waterways, the danger may be looming if concerned authorities do not take immediate action.
In an appeal by one of the leaders of Ikorodu Ambassadors Group, Lateef Sholanke, the government needs to do something to clear the hyacinths and ensure unhindered movement on the waterways.
Saying commuters using the Ikorodu Ferry service cannot continue amidst the glaring danger, Sholanke noted that he spent 28 minutes from Apapa to Ikorodu and an additional 33 minutes between Ikorodu Lighter Terminal Port to Ikorodu Ferry Terminal because water hyacinths made it difficult for the ferry to navigate through the water body.
Due to the heavy vehicle traffic experienced Lagos-Ikorodu and the abysmal service offered BRT buses where commuters queue for hours with getting to board, many have resulted to using the more expensive ferry transport to get to there workplaces.
Following this hyacinth challenge, Residents are appealing to the National Inland Waterways Authority NIWA, Lagos State Government, elected lawmakers both at National and state level to come to their rescue before issues spiral out of control.
