Gambia: As Jammeh’s Term Expires In 48 Hours; Dozens Of Army Officers Detained

There has been massive crackdown on Gambia’s senior army officers, who have been suspected of planning to switch their allegiance to President elect Adama Barrow, the Freedom Newspaper can report. Over dozen officers have been arrested and detained at the National Intelligence Agency headquarters in Banjul. The officers fate is yet to be decided, as dictator Jammeh is refusing to facilitate a peaceful transfer of power come Thursday, January, 19th.

Gambia’s Justice Minister Mama Singhateh, has reportedly fled the country, the Freedom Newspaper has gathered. Justice Minister Singhateh, is believed to have fled to neighboring Senegal. She has joined the list of Jammeh cabinet Ministers on the run.

Ms. Singhateh’s whereabouts became an issue on Monday, afternoon after reports emerged that one of the police intervention officers (PIU) assigned to her has deserted the force. The police command were notified about the officer’s alleged absconding. This was before midday. Ms. Singhateh, later followed suit. She was reportedly smuggled out of the country by third party intelligence operatives.

Gambian Parliamentarians on Monday, passed a motion (resolution) calling on the ECOWAS Heads of State Authority to desist from using force to flush out the regime of dictator Yahya Jammeh. The resolution has barred the West African bloc from deploying troops to Banjul, to settle the political impasse. Deputies agreed that peace should encouraged to settle the political impasse and not through forceful means. The MPS cited the issue of Gambia being a sovereign nation and the need for the country’s constitution to be respected by the African bloc.

Gambian Foreign Affairs Minister, has resigned from the regime of dictator Yahya Jammeh, the Freedom Newspaper can reveal. Foreign Minister Neneh Macdouall Gaye, tendered her resignation letter today.

“I am of the conviction that under the prevailing circumstances, I cannot effectively serve as Foreign Minister. I thank you for the opportunity you given me to serve my country,” said Ms. Gaye in her resignation letter dated January 16th. A source emailed Ms. Gaye’s resignation letter to the Freedom Newspaper. Ms. Gaye prayed for the peaceful settling of Gambia’s political impasse. We hereby reproduce Ms. Gaye’s resignation letter, which was addressed to dictator Jammeh.

President Barack Obama has ended the longstanding “wet foot, dry foot” policy that allowed Cuban immigrants who reached U.S. soil to stay in America.

Obama’s decision to end the policy is effective immediately.

The Obama administration made the announcement following a meeting with Cuban officials on Thursday. Over 100,000 Cubans were allowed to stay in America under the 20-year-old policy.

Nigerian-Born Gambia’s Chief Justice Pulls Out Of Injunction To Stop Barrow’s Inauguration

Nigerian-born Gambia's Chief Justice, Emmanuel Oluwasegun Fagbenle, on Monday pulled out of hearing a bid by President Yahya Jammeh to halt the inauguration of president-elect Adama Barrow later this week, as the country's political crisis rumbles on.

The country has been plunged in political turmoil since Jammeh disputed Barrow's December election victory and refused to cede power.

Jammeh has lodged a challenge to the election result with The Gambia's Supreme Court and last week filed a fresh injunction to prevent the chief justice from swearing Barrow into office.

Gambia Supreme Court yesterday declined to stop Thursday’s inauguration of President-elect Adama Barrow.
The Supreme Court ruling followed a petition by President Yahya Jammeh, seeking an injunction aimed at blocking Barrow’s swearing in.
Jammeh’s constitutional term in office is expected to end on Wednesday after he lost to businessman Barrow, in the December 1, 2016 poll.
Although he initially accepted defeat, he has since lodged a case before the Supreme Court requesting the result be annulled.

Gambia’s President-Elect Adama Barrow To Stay In Senegal ‘Until His Inauguration’

Gambian president-elect Adama Barrow is in neighbouring Senegal and will remain there at the request of west African leaders until his planned inauguration this week, Senegalese sources said Sunday.

“Senegalese President Macky Sall accepted on Saturday in Bamako to welcome Gambian president-elect Adama Barrow in Dakar until his inauguration,” the official APS agency said citing an official.

A pastor in one of the Nigerian branches of Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide has been expelled from the ministry.

According to a statement signed by Pastor David Apelorioye, the head of admin at OFM, Pastor Joseph Aiyedun, who is in charge of one the OFM branches in Aba, Abia State, was fired for participating in the Mavrodi Mondial Movement (MMM), a ponzi scheme widely acclaimed to be a satanic venture.

It should be recalled that the founder and president of the OFM, Apostle Johnson Suleman, at a church service in November 2016, warned members of his congregation against involving in MMM, calling it 'demonic'.

The statement from the church reads thus; "The management of Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide is using this medium to react to a news making the rounds on the social media regarding one of his pastors who used the ministry's name to register for the MMM scheme. Ordinarily, the church would not have reacted to the story because of falsehoods being published regularly by some blogs and news websites whose credibility are questionable. But after a thorough investigation by the church authority, it was established that one of our branch pastors in Aba, Pastor Joseph Aiyedun, indeed participated in the scheme."

The Commissioner of Police in Imo, Mr Taiwo Lakanu, has assured the residents and the state government of a possible apprehension of the murderers of U.S-based Imo indigene, Mr Chuks Okebata.

Lakanu who gave the assurance in an interview with newsmen on Monday in Owerri, noted that Okebata was abducted and murdered by unknown gunmen on Thursday.

The deceased from Mbieri in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state, was abducted and murdered during his visit to the country to celebrate the Yuletide and the New Year with his family.

A 26-year-old man identified as Mathew Oguntade, who allegedly killed his 20-year-old wife, Mary Oguntade, during a fight in their home behind the Anglican Church at Owode-Ijako, in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun state, has been arrested by the State Police Command.

The incident happened on Friday, January 13, 2017, at about midnight when the couple engaged in a fight, according to the Police First Information Report.

The family of a Nigerian woman, late Mrs. Oluwashola Atunrayo Gaska (nee Adefolalu), who allegedly died in Poland, has decried the cremation of their daughter’s body by her polish husband, Jakub (Kuba) Gaska, without their permission, thereby raising suspicion over her death.

Shola, aged 36-year-old, went to Poland to study Architecture in 2000, but later met her Polish husband there and they were married in 2010.

Video of a 12-year-old US girl's suicide broadcast live has gone viral around the world, and local police say they're unable to do anything about it.

Katelyn Nicole Davis of Cedartown in northern Georgia posted the 40-minute video on December 30 showing her placing her phone in her front yard, tying a rope around a tree limb and saying goodbye to her family and friends in front of the camera.

"I'm sorry that I'm not pretty enough," she says in tears, carefully made up and dressed in a white blouse and jeans. "I'm sorry for everything. I'm really, truly sorry. But I can't do this."

Following the failure of the mediation team to persuade President Yahya Jammeh to step down, the Gambian leader has telephoned ECOWAS Chairperson, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, to release judges to come to the country and "help resolve the crisis constitutionally."

Mr. Jammeh said: "With regards to our last meeting when you came here. I want to request your assistance as the Chairperson of ECOWAS authority of heads of states to help us resolve this impasse peacefully through the court. I hereby request you for ECOWAS to facilitate the release of the judges so that they can come and help us resolve constitutionally through the constitution of The Gambia."

Dr Ishaku Chollom Pam FRCP, Consultant Physician, has narrated the details of the conversations that preceded the cold-blooded execution of Lt Col James Pam, the adjutant-general of the Nigerian Army in the hands of the January 15, 1966 mutineers, Leadership reports.

Lt Col Pam stood out as the officer who broke the news of the coup to Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, the would-be Head of State.

Recall that on the night of January 15th, 1966, a coup d’etat took place in Nigeria which resulted in the murder of a number of leading political figures and senior army officers. This was the first coup in the history of our country, and 98% of the officers that planned and led it were Igbo.

Following an accusation that a prominent Pastor know as Pastor Ken slept with another man’s wife, some angry residents of a community, stormed the church premises.

According to reports, the pastor was alleged to be promiscuous. And when angry mob searched his church which is located at Upper Uwa Ahanor street, Benin in Edo state, they were shocked to discover charms, coffins, photos of people and ladies' pants.

It was gathered that the residents who arrived the premises in agitation, destroyed the instruments and other materials they found in their sight before conducting a “clearance operation.”
