Survivors of Nigeria's 'baby factories' share their stories

As 16-year-old Miriam* stepped out of her tent to fetch water near the Madinatu Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Nigeria's northeastern Borno state in January last year, a middle-aged woman she knew as "Aunty Kiki" approached her.

She asked Miriam if she was interested in moving to the city of Enugu to work as a housemaid for a monthly salary.

Miriam, who is now 17, wasted no time in accepting the offer and began to prepare for her trip to the east the following day.

She told her 17-year-old cousin, Roda*, about it and advised her to approach Aunty Kiki.

When Roda, who is now 18, met Aunty Kiki the next morning, she asked if there was a job for her, too. The woman quickly agreed, so Roda packed her bags.

"We were both very excited to travel to Enugu," Miriam says. "We had suffered so much for four years and were happy to go somewhere new to start a new life."
5 things you don't know about baby factories in Nigeria

The promise
Both girls, who used to live in the same compound in Bama, fled the northeastern Nigerian town in 2017 when Boko Haram stormed the area, burning down houses and kidnapping women and children.

Miriam and Roda fled, leaving other members of their family behind. They do not know what happened to them.

The two girls trekked for several days to reach Madinatu, where they remained for nearly two years before their trip to Enugu in southeastern Nigeria.

In Madinatu, Miriam and Roda lived together in a small bamboo tent inside the camp that houses more than 5,000 people who, like them, had fled Boko Haram.

Crude Oil Fall: 84 million Barrels of Nigerian Crude Stranded At Sea

Oil Fall: 84 million barrels of Nigerian crude stranded at sea ...
An estimated 84 million barrels of Nigerian crude oil is currently stranded at sea, a report by Wall Street Journal has said.

In an April 27 report, the newspaper said cargo ships filled with Nigerian crude had nowhere to go and Nigerian oil companies were competing to fill the “last few empty tankers still left at sea”.

The tankers are reported to be coming from production fields managed by Royal Dutch Shell and Exxon Mobil.

According to experts, it would be risky to shut down production in some oil fields as the wells are “too old to be restarted once they go idle”.

How Abacha Family Hid $1bn Loot - And How Goodluck Jonathan Government Smoked Them Out

BREAKING: Buhari Govt Receives $312m Abacha Loot From US - Tori4Town
The Abacha family thought they had done Nigeria a favour by giving up $1.3 billion but the Goodluck Jonathan administration soon discovered that they still had $1 billion hidden in various accounts in Europe, according to Mohammed Bello Adoke.
Using the Nigerian legal system, Mohammed Abacha, the eldest surviving son of the late head of state, had tried to stop the federal government from seizing the looted funds and repatriating them to Nigeria, but “a simple trick” outsmarted him, the former attorney-general further said.
In his book, “Burden of Service: Reminiscences of Nigeria’s former Attorney-General”, Adoke insinuated that the Abacha family was so offended by his doggedness in the loot recovery that they found allies in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to hound him after he left office in 2015.

ABACHA LOOT: See Amount Recovered So Far

US Lawmakers kick against returning Abacha's $320 million loot to Nigeria
Even though he is no more, General Sani Abacha has been humorously described as one of the ancestors of Nigeria who has been donating money generously to successive governments from the land of the dead as his loot was outrageous. Sunday Vanguard captures the looted funds:

He’s a man of multiple impressions. To some people, he was an enigma. To others, he was humane. But to many, he was simply a mean dictator and the man who wore the thickest goggles in town. Yet, some quarters preferred him as a consummate soldier, leader par excellence, trailblazer, stabilizer and strategist.

Boris Back To Work Blue Prints: No Sharing Of Pens, Canteens Closed And Over-70s And The Obese Working From Home

Coronavirus UK: Government's strict back-to-work plans leaked
Via - Dailymail

Draft guidance seen by the Daily Mail suggested there will be no return to normality in the foreseeable future - despite ministers preparing to publish a back-to-work dossier and Boris Johnson (right) preparing to tell the nation on Sunday how lockdown will be eased. In the dossier, employers will be ordered to follow a range of restrictions (main) to protect workers in an attempt to limit the spread of coronavirus.

The government has warned that the measures could remain in place for a year. Employers will be told to close canteens and other communal areas, with staff encouraged to eat packed lunches on their own. Shift patterns will be staggered to limit the number of people at work at any one time and reduce rush-hour pressure on public transport.

As the COVID-19 Pandemic Continues, Face Masks Have Become a Status Symbol

A woman wearing a protective mask carries a toilet paper package on the street on March 13, 2020 in New York City.
Last week, mere weeks after the surgeon general discouraged Americans from buying masks to protect from COVID-19 transmission, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention started recommending that Americans wear masks to help slow the spread of coronavirus.

It was the type of about-face that has characterized the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, one that has been marked by mixed messaging, the promotion of dangerous misinformation, and a bumbling incompetence more suggestive of a Benny Hill sketch than a federal government task force. Above all else, it prompted people to flock online by the millions to comb through a now-limited supply of masks — and garment manufacturers have been all too happy to meet demand.
