
Probe: An air ambulance can be seen landing at the scene in Woolwich, south London, this afternoon where police were called to an assault
Police and ambulance services were this afternoon called to south London where two people are feared to have been shot.
Images from the scene in Woolwich showed two men on the ground surrounded by officers.
This afternoon police would only confirm that they had been called to an 'incident'.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: 'Officers were called at 2.20pm to John Wilson Street in Woolwich. It was to what we believe was an initial report of an assault.'
Police officers are on the scene and the area has been cordoned off.
On its Twitter account, the Metropolitan Police helicopter team called the incident 'serious'.
Rumours were circulating on social networking sites about what might have happened, but the reports have not yet been possible to verify.
