Miracle! 2-year-old Autistic Boy Survives Fall From 3rd-Story Window in Manhattan

Screams of horror turned to cries of joy after a 2-year-old autistic boy cheated death Wednesday in a terrifying three-story plunge from his Lower East Side apartment window.
Miracle toddler Jayvin Cruz bounced off the wire-and-wood roof of a garbage can storage bin before landing with a thud on the concrete sidewalk as stunned eyewitnesses rushed to his aid. “At first I thought it was a car accident,” said witness Earl Boyd, 58, who was sitting across the street when the bone-chilling thump echoed through the night.

The tumbling tot, after his 1:20 a.m. spill from a living room window with no safety guard, was rushed with a fractured skull to Bellevue Hospital, a police source said.
His father was sleeping nearby and his mother cleaning up after the little boy’s late-night snack when his disappearance created instant chaos at 177 Chrystie St.
The boy’s grandmother said she was awakened by the howls of her daughter in the seconds after Jayvin slipped into the darkness.

“When I open my eyes my daughter and the father are running, screaming,” Carmen Fernandez, 59, recalled. “I don’t know what happened, so I’m running too, downstairs. I think, ‘My God! The baby fell out the window!’”

Thank God that was there. That baby would have gone down straight onto the concrete.
Boyd was sitting across the street when he heard a loud bang followed by the baby’s piercing cries. A nearby couple immediately sprinted to Jayvin’s aid.
“The baby was lying on the sidewalk crying, but I couldn’t see any blood,” Boyd said. “That (bin) broke the baby’s fall. Thank God that was there. That baby would have gone down straight onto the concrete.”
The death-defying kid also suffered cuts and bruises on his body, a police source said. He was fitted with a neck brace and listed in stable condition at the hospital.
Dad Norberto Cruz, after returning from the hospital Wednesday, said he had requested a window guard for the living room at least a year ago.
But building superintendent Andres Durant, 54, said he was never told by the boy’s parents about any problem with a missing window guard.
