A girl of 14 who punched a boy in the face in a video watched more than 2.7million times on Facebook cried as she was detained for eight months yesterday.
The blonde schoolgirl had previously told a court her parents’ address was ‘whatever, whatever, whatever, whatever, whatever’.
Wearing tracksuit bottoms and a grey top, the youngster wept and hugged her parents yesterday as she was sentenced for the attack.
Croydon Youth Court heard how she had been on a youth rehabilitation order for previous offences including grievous bodily harm and intimidating a witness when she was filmed shouting abuse and hitting a ‘vulnerable’ 14-year-old boy.
The footage went viral after being uploaded to Facebook last week. After it was seen by police, the girl – who cannot be named for legal reasons – was arrested the same day and charged with assault.
The court heard the aspiring beautician, who had been undergoing anger management therapy as part of her previous rehabilitation order, suffered ‘public backlash’ and ‘intimidation’ after the video went viral.
But magistrate Ken Ashken told her: ‘This was an extremely unpleasant assault on a vulnerable 14-year-old who did not seek to respond in any way.
‘Despite your young age and the undoubtedly good sides that you have within you, the offence is so serious, in regards to your previous offending, that a custodial sentence is justifiable.’
The child, from New Addington, Croydon, had ‘shown real intelligence and insight’ in asking her lawyer to apologise to the boy on her behalf.
