According to provincial police spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, members of the police Search and Rescue unit were called out early Monday morning after residents alerted the police to the sounds of a baby crying in a pit toilet. “Sergeant Levi Mabethlela eventually succeeded in bringing the newborn girl back to the surface, where after she was taken to hospital for treatment,” said Otto.
The condition of the child is still not known but Otto has confirmed that an investigation into the identity of the mother is ongoing.
No arrests have been made.
