TRAVELODGE PLANS 56-BED HOTEL ON SITE OF PECKHAM HIGH STREET POST OFFICE

Peckham High Street Post Office
The Travelodge hotel chain has submitted plans to build a five-storey, 56-bed hotel in Peckham.
The “value hotel brand” with over 500 branches in the UK, submitted the plans for 125 Peckham High Street last month.

Building the hotel would mean demolishing the current two-storey block, where the Post Office, Liz Dynamic Designs clothes shop, and Payless convenience shop are based.
If given the go ahead by Southwark Council, the construction would require the Post Office to relocate to a temporary base.
But the plans state that space for one retail unit would be preserved on the ground floor, which a Travelodge spokesperson has confirmed, would be built to equal the size of the current Post Office for it to return to.

Eileen Conn of community group Peckham Vision said the idea of having a new hotel on the site would be “welcome”, but criticised the design by ROH Architects as “depressingly bland and characterless”.
“One of the great features of Peckham town centre is the variety of shapes and sizes and decorative features of the buildings,” Eileen said.
“The fashion for large five-seven-storey bland blocks is potentially destroying this really interesting characteristic of the Peckham town centre streetscape.”
She said it was disappointing that the designs do not live up to the council’s policy that new builds in the centre of Peckham “should respect the character and appearance of the Conservation Area”.
Travelodge says the hotel would provide five full-time jobs, and twelve part-time jobs.
Residents have until April 5 to express their views to Southwark Council.
