Florida Police Departments Shame Alleged Looters In Cheeky Tweets

Florida’s police departments have taken to humiliating alleged looters online in a bid to curb thefts in the wake of Hurricane Irma.

On Sunday Fort Lauderdale PD announced on Twitter that it had arrested nine people who were caught on camera looting a pawn shop and nearby clothing store on Sunday.

That announcement was accompanied by a dryly funny message from Chief Rick Maglione, who said: ‘Going to prison over a pair of sneakers is a fairly bad life choice. Stay home and look after your loved ones and be thankful they are all safe.’

Miami PD joined in the fun, posting a picture of 10 men in a jail cell with the caption ‘Thinking about looting? Ask these guys how that turned out. #stayathome’

The alleged Fort Lauderdale looters’ arrests came after camera crews from ABC Local 10 filmed the group breaking into Simon’s Sportswear, an athletic clothing retailer with dozens of locations across South Florida.
