Gas Explosion Kills Italy-Based Nigerian Table Tennis Player While On Vacation In Nigeria

Nigeria's table tennis star Seun Ajetunmobi was on Friday confirmed dead following a gas explosion inside his home in the southwestern state of Lagos.

The Italy-based Ajetunmobi died due to severe injuries he sustained during the domestic accident late Thursday, according to local officials.

"He died Friday morning while receiving treatment at a Lagos hospital," said an official statement.

The Nigerian Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) described the late Ajetunmobi as "a key player that will be sorely missed."


According to NTTF scribe Anthony Idaye, the deceased athlete was on holiday in Nigeria after the end of the season in Italy.

Last month, Ajetunmobi won the men's singles champion at the annual Aso Championships, a local tourney, in Nigeria's capital city of Abuja.

His last international duty for Nigeria was at the 2015 African Games in Congo Brazzaville.

Secretary-General of NTTF, Idaye Anthony, who released a statement on behalf of the sports agency, wrote

“On behalf of the President, the executive board members and the entire table tennis family in Nigeria, I regret to announce the sudden death of one of our National Team players – Seun Ajetunmobi, which sad event occurred early morning of June 1, 2018, in a Lagos hospital.

“The Italy-based athlete was on holiday in Nigeria after the end of the season in Italy. The federation sympathised with the player’s family and his supporters in Nigeria and around the World. The burial will be announced later by his family”.

Also, a table-tennis coach with Lagos State, Samson Ajayi, said that the player exhibited impressive performances as a national player in his lifetime.

“I got the news hours ago and called the brother to the late Seun who confirmed the sad development.

“The deceased started well and exhibited impressive performances as a national player in various championships he featured at singles and teams’ events.


“These stood him out among his peers,’’ he said.

Ajetunmobi died at 33.
