Black Panther the First Movie to be Shown in Saudi Arabia After 35 Years

Black Panther is the highest grossing superhero movie at the domestic box office, most tweeted about film, has earned nearly $1.3 billion worldwide and will become the first film to break Saudi Arabia’s three-decade movie theater ban.

Disney will be releasing Black Panther on April 18 at an AMC theater in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh, according to Variety.

In December, the Middle Eastern nation announced that it would lift the 35-year old cinema ban. The move is in part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s attempt to modernize Saudi society.

The ban was in place after the country adopted ultraconservative ideologies in the early 1980’s.

The film is distributed by Middle Eastern distribution partner Italia Films in partnership with Disney.
