A NIGERIAN man, who entered into marriages of convenience with two
Zimbabwean women on separate occasions, has been sentenced to nine
months in prison.
Ajaero Hillary Uwaoma (33) admitted to charges of bigamy when he appeared before magistrate Mrs Patience Ururu-Madondo.
Uwaoma entered Zimbabwe in September 2004 and wedded Fadzai Charity
Mazuru before wedding again Greater Tariro Gwekwerere the following
month on October 20.
In passing sentence, Mrs Ururu-Madondo said Uwaoma abused the laws of the country for his own convenience.
"In addition to that he tricked these women into marriages of
convenience. The offence of bigamy by foreigners is on the increase thus
a clear message should be sent to would be offenders," she said.
She said a custodial sentence would meet the justice of the case before effecting nine months.
Prosecutor Mr David Magwegwe said that Uwaoma wedded Mazuru at the Harare Magistrates' courts on September 8 2004.
He later married Gwekwerere at the same courts on October 20 the same
year in a bid to secure a residence permit. Both marriages were
solemnised under chapter 5:11 of the Marriages Act. The offence came to
light when immigration officials interviewed the two women who then
spilled the beans.
