What would have been a tragedy in Nollywood, especially in the Yoruba movie fraternity was averted some days ago when a popular actress, Modupe Johnson well known as Faliwerepe and her family were involved in a road crash in Ekiti State.

We learnt that the actress, along with her husband and children, were returning from a function when a car crash into theirs at Ijero-Ekiti in Ekiti State.

Further information revealed that the driver of the car that crashed Faliwerepe's car was allegedly sleeping while driving before he crashed into them.

We were informed that Faliwerepe broke her leg while one of the kids in the car is presently at the General Hospital in Ikeja, Lagos receiving treatment for stomach injuries.

NIGERIA'S security services, on Thursday, said they had discovered a home in Kano, where Lebanese nationals had stored weapons intended to attack Israeli and Western targets in Nigeria.

The Kano State Director of State Security Service (SSS), Bassey Etang and a separate military statement described the compound as hosting a "terrorist cell" tied to the Lebanese Shiite movement, Hezbollah.

No evidence was provided linking the home to the Lebanese group.

Journalists were brought to the compound in the upmarket Bompai neighbourhood of Kano and taken to a bunker dug beneath a bedroom where weapons had allegedly been stored.

"The weapons include anti-tank weapons, rocket propelled guns, anti-tank (and) antipersonnel mines, among other dangerous weapons," the military statement said.

It said three Lebanese nationals had been arrested in connection with the illegal arms cache, while a fourth suspect was at large.

"This is the handiwork of Hezbollah. What has just been discovered is the cell of Hezbollah and what you have seen here is a Hezbollah armoury," Etang said.

"These weapons are meant to be used to target Israeli and Western interests in Nigeria," he added.

According to the SSS chief, "investigations are still ongoing to determine if the Lebanese nationals are really connected to Boko Haram."

Nigeria security agencies on Friday evening sealed off the popular Amigo supermarket, owned by a Lebanese who is accused of being part of a major terrorist cell.

The Joint Task Force in Kano on Thursday named Fauzi Fawad, a co-owner of Amigo and Wonderland Amusement Park, Abuja’s largest, as allegedly part of a Lebanese Hezbollah cell operating in Nigeria.

Both public areas were open on Friday as shoppers and visitors, many unaware of Mr. Fawad’s alleged involvement, continued their transactions. Wonderland also allowed visitors in without the basic entry fee.

Americans are locked up for crimes — from writing bad checks to using drugs — that would rarely produce prison sentences in other countries. And in particular they are kept incarcerated far longer than prisoners in other nations.

Criminologists and legal scholars in other industrialized nations say they are mystified and appalled by the number and length of American prison sentences.

The United States has, for instance, 2.3 million criminals behind bars, more than any other nation, according to data maintained by the International Center for Prison Studies at King's College London.

China, which is four times more populous than the United States, is a distant second, with 1.6 million people in prison. (That number excludes hundreds of thousands of people held in administrative detention, most of them in China's extrajudicial system of re-education through labor, which often singles out political activists who have not committed crimes.)

Heart Attack Woman on Plane - 15 Cardiologists(Doctors) on Board

If you fall ill on a flight, you have to hope there is a doctor on board. So Dorothy Fletcher can count herself lucky.

When she suffered a heart attack on a transatlantic flight from Manchester to Florida, she turned out to be on a plane full of cardiologists.

Fifteen experts on their way to a cardiologyconference responded when a stewardess asked for medical assistance.

They stood up en masse and rushed to save Mrs Fletcher, 67, from Liverpool. They fed drips into her arms and used an onboard medical kit to control the life-threatening attack.

The plane was diverted to North Carolina, where Mrs Fletcher was treated in the intensive care unit.

Canadians will not need visa for UAE from June 1

The United Arab Emirates will nix visa requirements imposed on Canadian travelers as of June 1, officials said Tuesday, ending a row between the two countries that started in 2010 over aviation rights.

The Canadian Embassy informed Emirates 24|7 that words of thanks had been voiced by Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird.

“Sincere thanks to my counterpart His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the U.A.E., for delivering on his commitment to restore the previous visa regime for Canadians,” he said.

“It is great news for the tens of thousands of Canadians who travel to the U.A.E. each year for work or for vacation. It will help increase economic opportunity and long-term prosperity in both countries.”

Amongst Nigeria’s now celebrated tech and Internet business founders – including Chika Nwobi, Sim Shagaya, Tayo Oviosu, and Tunde Kehinde – Jason Chukwuma Njoku stands out as perhaps the most prominent, certainly the most controversial and criticised.

Jason, as he is commonly called, is founder of iROKO TV, Nollywood’s largest online distributor. It is a business of which many Nigerians across the globe are proud, but it is only one that has brought bucket loads of negativity.

He has been criticised by Nollywood content owners, criticised by bloggers for being an “asshole” – a Nairaland post crowned him “bully-man” – criticised by video marketers who find him exploitative, accused of a bias towards his gaming company, even criticised for funding (other) start-ups. And there’s yet more.

But if Jason Njoku is a bit fazed by all the negativity, he isn’t betraying an ounce of concern as we have lunch at the upscale French-styled Brazzarrie Restaurant in Lagos’ Four Points by Sheraton, where he has just imperially informed me that the start-up by his long-time friend turned competitor and sworn enemy, Hugo Obi – Maliyo Games – is “fucked.”

This is after the he had eviscerated Obi on his blog thus, “Fuck him”, and for good measure “MALIYO games were really not that great. No one played their games… I hope to crush (him).”  More after the cut........

According to speculations within the Yoruba movie industry circle, Lizzy, as she is fondly called by her friends, has allegedly taken her pregnancy to three different men, none of whom has accepted responsibility for the unborn baby.

Digs done by First Weekly Magazine showed that Liz Da Silva first went to MC Oluomo, who allegedly slept with her on the night of Oshodi Day, which held in December 2012, but MC Oluomo reportedly denied responsibility for the pregnancy.

Sources told First Weekly that shortly after this, Liz turned to one Akeem, who shuttles between Nigeria and the UK, who she dated while she was shooting her movie, which she premiered in October 2012 at White House, Ikeja, Lagos, but he also rejected the pregnancy.

Not done yet, the actress reportedly turned to one Khalid Soleye, who she met at Shoprite, Ikeja, Lagos in October 2012. Khalid, as we were told by the tale-bearers, works in an oil company.

Saudi Preacher Who 'Raped and Tortured' His Five -year-old Daughter to Death is Released after Paying 'Blood Money' [Photo]

A ‘celebrity’ Saudi preacher accused of raping, torturing and killing his five-year-old daughter has reportedly been released from custody after agreeing to pay ‘blood money’.

Fayhan al-Ghamdi had been accused of killing his daughter Lama, who suffered multiple injuries including a crushed skull, broken back, broken ribs, a broken left arm and extensive bruising and burns. Social workers say she had also been repeatedly raped and burnt.

Fayhan al-Ghamdi admitted using a cane and cables to inflict the injuries after doubting his five-year-old daughter’s virginity and taking her to a doctor, according to the campaign group Women to Drive.

Rather than getting the death penalty or receiving a long prison sentence for the crime, Fayhan al-Ghamdi served only a few months in jail before a judge ruled the prosecution could only seek ‘blood money’.

Albawaba News reported the judge as saying: "Blood money and the time the defendant had served in prison since Lama's death suffices as punishment."

Obasanjo, Buhari, Tambuwal, others Shun Jonathan’s Event

KEY predecessors of President Goodluck Jonathan in office, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo; and ex-dictators, retired Generals Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Babangida,  and Abdusalami Abubakar (retd.), as well as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, on Wednesday shunned the Democracy Day event of the Federal Government.

While all former heads of government were reportedly invited to the event where Jonathan rendered an account of his mid-term performance, only Alhaji Shehu Shagari, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.) and Chief Ernest Shonekan attended.

Gowon ruled as military head of state between 1966 and 1976; Shagari from 1979 to 1983; while Shonekan spent barely 99 days in office as head of the Interim National Government foisted on the country by Babangida after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election won by the late businessman, MKO Abiola.

Rather than be in Abuja, Obasanjo chose to attend the First Jigawa State Investment Forum in Dutse, where he showered praises on Governor Sule Lamido for being a brilliant performer in whom he (Obasanjo) was well pleased to have helped to office.

“You can help someone to find a job but you can’t help the person to do the job. In this case, we found a job for Sule Lamido and Sule Lamido was ready, willing, able and competent to do the job,” he reportedly said at the event.

For how long have you been married?

We have been married for over 12 years.

How and when did you meet?

Soji: We met around 1994. Then, I was working as a studio engineer in Lagos. She came for the production of some movie sound tracks. I was the one producing the sound tracks for her. In 1998, we were working on her first album, when I proposed to her to be my wife.

Tope, what was the attraction to Soji? Did you marry him because you thought he would be of use to your business? 

Tope: No. I believe it was the plan of God for us to get married. Before he proposed, I never saw Soji as a man that had the standards I desired. Then, I was a ‘big girl’ in the movie industry. I have experiences of many things in life. So, imagine a man, who was staying in one studio and working at all times asking me out! He was too gentle for my liking and his stature was not encouraging either. But I discovered that God’s purpose for our life must come to pass. Then, I never knew that I would be a vessel in God’s hands. I never knew I had His grace in my life.  I never knew God had planned that we would come together and do exploits in His kingdom. I was just going about producing sound tracks for movies and I was not into any ministry.

Mountain of Fire Church, General Overseer Sued Over Demolition of Private Property In Defiance of Court Order

A Pentecostal sect, the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), its General Overseer, Daniel Olukoya, as well as its trustees have been joined in a suit claiming the church illegally demolished a landed property and forcibly evicted its residents in defiance of a court ruling. The demolished property was located at 6th Avenue, Plot 2, Prayer City, Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, Magboro, Ibafo, Ogun State.
The plaintiffs identified a certain Pastor Frederick Olubunmi Alewi as the person who carried out the demolition on behalf of the church. SaharaReporters learned that Mr. Alewi disclosed that he obeyed the instructions of his “spiritual father,” Pastor Olukoya, in flouting a court order which had earlier asked for all parties to maintain the status quo while the case was heard by a judge.
