2019 African Games: Nigeria Now Second On Medals Table


A flurry of gold medals in wrestling and others from athletics, boxing and even canoeing has seen Nigeria soar to the second spot on the overall medals table at the ongoing African Games in Morocco.


Nigeria, as of Thursday night, had gathered a total of 103 medals (40 gold, 28 silver, and 35 bronze medals).

South Africa, who were previously occupying the second position, has now dropped to third as the curtain is set to drop on this edition of the African Games.

Demonstrators rallied on Saturday in cities across Britain against Prime Minister Boris Johnson's controversial move to suspend parliament weeks before Brexit (pictured, protesters in London today)
Campaigners have started to gather in cities including London and Newcastle, with further protests planned in locations including Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow. The first few protesters gathered in London at around 11.30am, following a rallying call from Jeremy Corbyn who declared activists were 'right to take to the streets' (top, in London). 

And then later hundreds occupied areas of Newcastle (bottom-left) and York (bottom-right) for the 'stop the coup' protests organised by Anti-Brexit campaign group Another Europe Is Possible. Left-wing group Momentum is calling on its members to 'occupy bridges and blockade roads' in conjunction with unrest on the streets - with hundreds already campaigning outside Downing Street in Whitehall, central London.

Nofisat Adetutu Ibrahim, a staff with an old generation bank in Akure, Ondo state, has been murdered by some suspected assassins. Ibrahim was killed on Wednesday, August 28, at the Oke Ogba area of Akure South local government area of the state around 7:30 pm.

It was gathered that late Nofisat was in charge of 'Point Of Sale' (POS) in the bank branch located in Oja Oba.

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that massive illegal importation of rice across the Benin border into Nigeria was threatening his administration’s food sufficiency policy.

The President said the decision to shut down the border was to stop smuggling activities in the area.

Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Mr. Femi Adesina, in a statement, explained that Buhari gave the reason during an audience granted his Beninois counterpart, Patrice Talon, on the sidelines of the 7th Tokyo International Conference for African Development (TICAD7), in Yokohama, Japan yesterday.

An eyewitness, Ibrahim Abdullahi, who was a prisoner when the environmental rights activist, the late Ken Saro-Wiwa, was killed in 1995 by the late General Sani Abacha government, on Thursday, gave his account of how the late Ogoni leader and eight others were killed and buried.

He said the soldiers who carried out the execution took their corpses to a bush and poured acid on them before dumping them in a shallow grave.

Abdullahi, who was granted a state pardon in June this year by the Governor of Cross River State, Ben Ayade, after spending 30 years in prison, stated this in an interview with journalists at the African Centre for Peace and Development, Abuja.

What would have been a routine task of recovering stolen government movable properties nearly ended in a fatality on Thursday evening as the members of the Imo State Committee on Recovery of Movable Government Assets were attacked by heavily armed thugs suspected to have been hired by former Governor Rochas Okorocha.


The committee had gone to the former governor’s house to recover 20 security and protocol vehicles, four-speed boats donated to the state by the NDDC, the only serviceable crane owned by the state used to install and repair street lights, over 100 street lights poles amongst other things.

The Nigerian Police Force has seized the international passport of pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly, COZA.

This was done as part of the bail condition granted to the pastor who was interrogated a few days ago over a rape allegation leveled against him by Busola Dakolo, wife of singer Timi Dakolo.

A search was conducted at his residence and office on Wednesday by detectives from the Force Criminal Investigation Department(FCID), Abuja.

Retaliation: Nigeria Slashes Visa Fees For US citizens

Barely 24 hours after the US authorities increased the cost of visa application for Nigerians under a tit for tat policy, FG has announced a reduction in the amount payable by citizens of the U.S seeking Nigerian visas.

The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, said the FG has approved a reduction in visa charges payable by United States citizens from $180 to $150.

In a statement, the US consulate in Nigeria had said America was “reciprocating” the extra visa fee the Nigerian government charges its citizens. The consulate had explained that the extra cost would be applicable to only those whose visa requests were granted.

At least three people died after a ferry belonging to Cameroon’s shipping company Achouka sank off Cameroon’s Atlantic coast Sunday evening, according to local authorities.

About 200 passengers were on board the ferry, which left neighboring Nigeria and was heading to Tiko wharf in Cameroon’s Southwest region, a Cameroon navy official who preferred not to be named said.
