Follwoing the swearing in of President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, May 29 for a second term in office, the race for the leadership of the National Assembly has intensified, as the federal lawmakers prepare for the proclamation of the 9th Assembly and their inauguration, as well as choosing their leaders thereafter.

Politics and intrigues regarding the emergence of the President of the 9th Senate recorded a new twist yesterday as the Presidency openly indicated interest in approaching the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan.

Stepdad Of Missing 4-Year-Old Girl ‘Confesses To Killing Her By Accident’

The stepfather of a four-year-old girl who went missing one month ago has confessed to accidentally killing her.

The suspect, Derion Vence allegedly made his confession on Friday to Quanell X, a community activist who was representing the victim, Maleah Davis' mother. He confessed he killed Maleah before dumping her body in Arkansas.

Quanell X also revealed that a plane will fly from Houston, Texas, where Maleah vanished, to the spot in Arkansas where Vence allegedly said he dumped her body. 

Appeal Court Orders Forfeiture Of N1.4bn Obtained By Company Linked To Saraki

The Court of Appeal in Lagos, on Friday okayed the request of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the final forfeiture of N1.4billion which a firm, Melrose General Services Limited, obtained from the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) through false claims.

Melrose is allegedly linked to outgoing Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, whose two aides- Gbenga Makanjuola and Kolawole Shittu are being prosecuted by the EFCC in respect of the matter.

Justice Cecilia Olatoregun of the Federal High Court in Lagos had on April 27, 2018 ordered the final forfeiture of the said N1.4billion to the Federal Government.

Saraki Loses International Appointment As Ambassador-at-Large of IHRC

Nigeria’s Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki has finally lost appointment as Ambassador-at-large of the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) for not meeting up with the necessary protocols demanded of the office.

In a letter issued and signed by the head of the Nigerian Office, Dr. Friday Sani which was made available to DAILY POST in Abuja on Thursday, Dr Saraki was not forthcoming despite several meetings with officials of the International agency.

The letter further indicated that the lawmaker had been put on prior notice by the Nigerian Central Office and Africa of IHRC in which he was properly briefed, regretting that the withdrawal of nomination became necessary in line with the protocols of the agency.

Lagos governor Babajide Sanwo-olu and his deputy Femi Hamzat was in Ajegunle to condole the family of late Mrs. Folasade Arogundade, a LASTMA officer who lost her life in the line of duty this past week.

Gbajabiamila’s Choice Of Wase As Deputy Twists Reps Speakership Race - Bago, Dyegh Build Alliance

The adoption of  Ahmed Wase by Femi Gbajabiamila as his running mate for the office of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker,  House of Representatives has brought a twist in the race for the Leadership of the 9th Assembly.

Gbajabiamila is the House Majority Leader and has been adopted by the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC for the office of the Speaker and Wase is the Deputy Majority Leader and was also in the contest for Speakership.

While Gbajabiamila was adopted by the APC, there are no traces to the party’s selection of Wase for the office of Deputy Speaker though it had zoned the position to the North Central; hence this is purely an arrangement by the present Majority Leader and his Deputy.

This political marriage of convenience has barred other contenders from the North-central and South-east whom many political observers believed were in the race for Speakership to cling the Deputy at the end of the day.

Reps Speakership: 195 Members-Elect Adopt Bago

The support base of Mohammed Bago, a frontline contender to the speakership of the House of Representatives of the incoming 9th National Assembly may have increased with 195 members-elect signing up for him. The move apparently shows that the members-elect may have largely bought into the equity agitation of the aspirant.

Similarly, 156 members were said to have openly declared support for his candidature recently after a meeting at a location in Gwarimpa, Abuja. Bago, a third time member from Niger State, is contesting against the All Progressives Congress, APC, endorsed aspirant, Femi Gbajabiamila from Lagos State, is generally regarded as the champion of equity and fairness in the contest for the speakership.

Man, 33, who set himself on fire outside the White House 'was hallucinating after taking synthetic marijuana K2 laced with PCP'

The man who died after setting himself on fire on a lawn near the White House on Wednesday was hallucinating at the time after taking the drug K2 that had been laced with PCP, according to police sources. 

Arnav Gupta, 33, was identified by US Park Police on Thursday after dying in the hospital. 

He had been reported missing by his family around the time that he was seen setting himself on fire on a lawn at Ellipse Park near the White House. 

Kwara Gov Assumes Office, Holds Maiden Security Council Meeting

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Thursday performed his first official duty by holding the security council meeting to receive briefings from all the heads of security agencies in the state.

The meeting, which held behind closed doors, was attended by all the members of the council, including the governor, deputy Governor Kayode Alabi, the Emir of Ilorin Dr Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, the state police commissioner Mr Kayode Egbetokun, among others.

Disturbing footage has emerged of a man setting himself on fire and calmly walking around near the White House as police desperately tried to douse the flames.
