How My Political Career Started: 'I wasn't interested in politics' - Former President Jonathan

Former President Jonathan said during his reception in Bayelsa yesterday that before he became deputy governor of the state, he had no interest in politics. Narrating how he dabbled into politics, Jonathan said,
“It all started with me and Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha. I knew Alamieyeseigha when he wanted to contest the governorship of Bayelsa State under the defunct United Nigeria Congress Party. That was the first time I knew Alamieyeseigha. We formed groups in every local governments – two persons to sign petition to enable Alamieyeseigha to contest. But a late Chief Judge asked me and one person from Ogbia to sign the petition. Even though I was a civil servant, I signed the document. I was in the Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission then. Of course, when he started his campaign, I joined.

According to the New York Times, new figures show that sales of the tummy-covering underpants favored by popular literary character-turned-movie icon Bridget Jones are officially back in, while the tiny thong is on its way out.
The new data indicates that sales of thongs have gone down seven per cent, while sales of larger drawers, such as the boy short and high-waisted panty have gone up 17 per cent.

Pledging to consolidate on the peaceful atmosphere that characterized his first term, he stated that by re-electing him for another four years, an end has come to petty political grievances and unfounded allegations capable of destabilizing the collective resolve to move the state forward.

Ministerial List Emerged, Buhari Drops Governors Fashola And Fayemi Finally?

All is not well with the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the party’s rank and file seems in disarray following the alleged dropping of the names of Lagos governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) and former Ekiti State governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi from the ministerial list of President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).
According to our investigation, both men who are supposed to be candidates of the national leader of the party Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu may not be enjoying the support of the Jagaban of Borgu kingdom that is expected to press for their inclusion. National Weekender learnt that their names were initially pencilled down on the list still being worked on before final vetting by the party’s national leadership but on advice of a very powerful chieftain in the South West, the names of the duo were erased.

WHERE NIGERIA WENT WRONG? - BY KWAME MARFO

BBC journalist and former Asia editor for the AFP news agency, Peter Cunliffe Jones draws some startling comparisons between Nigeria and Indonesia (here). They were on similar growth trajectories at the time of independence. They were both formed as one nation by Europeans around 1900 and governed by the colonial system of “indirect rule”. After independence, they lived through similar political experiences. For example, Peter observes that “their first coups were launched within months of each other – in September 1965 in Indonesia and in January 1966 in Nigeria – and their military regimes died within 12 months, in May 1998 and 1999. Both were palm oil producers and discovered oil. However, while Indonesia managed to diversify its economy away from oil, Nigeria’s economy has effectively developed into a one trick pony and a pretty unimaginative one. Oil contributes to 95% of foreign exchange earnings and 80% of budgetary revenue.
