In a touching display of motherly love, Desiree Waddell abandoned her seat and stood between her twin daughters Khadijah and Khertima Taylor’s caskets, singing to them for the last time at their funeral.

Smiling as she lovingly stroked photographs of her girls that were airbrushed onto their caskets, Waddell sang praises to Jesus Christ as mourners paid their last respects to the twins during their funeral service at the Revival Time Assembly Church, San Fernando.

Waddell was sitting next to the girls’ father, Edwin Taylor, when she seemed to be moved by the music and overcome with love for her 18-year-old twin daughters. She went to the girls’ caskets, which were airbrushed in their favourite colours—pink and purple—and sang. The twins’ brother, Dmitri, curled up and laid his head in his mother’s lap and cried himself to sleep.

It was one of the many emotional moments at the funeral for the Marabella twins, both of whom were killed, along with their friend Kafiya Gill, on Sunday when the car they were in crashed at Cross Crossing, San Fernando.

Gill’s mother, Peggy Ann Riley, also attended the funeral and shared her sympathy with Waddell.

Both mothers embraced briefly during the service.

Waddell maintained her composure through the ceremony, smiling as mourners greeted her.

As Riley began to weep, however, Waddell held the woman’s face, placed her head to Riley’s head and told her firmly, “Do not cry, do not cry.”

Khadijah and Khertima were described as “perfect twins” by their aunt Nadia Mc Donald, who delivered the eulogy at the funeral.

“They came together, they played together, they partied together, now they leave together. They were perfect twins,” Mc Donald told the congregation.

She told the packed church, which barely had standing room on its two levels, that the girls were not just Waddle’s and Taylor’s twins, “they were our twins.”

The girls were later laid to rest side by side in the same grave at Marabella public cemetery.

St Joseph’s Convent, San Fernando, students, dressed in their uniforms, also crowded the funeral hall to bid farewell to their schoolmates.

The haunting strains of Andrea Bocelli’s Time to say Goodbye echoed through the church as the school’s choir sang a multi-lingual version of the song in memory of their friends. Some of the twins’ school friends also paid tribute to the girls as they shared their memories of the times they spent together in school.

One of the students described Khadijah and Khertima as “inseparable.”

St Joseph’s Convent principal Dinna Bainey said Khadijah and Khertima were model students.” She said the staff expected great things from the twins and “that they would impact positively on our society.”

Reverend Lurtan Patterson, in his ministry of the Word, urged the twins’ family to take solace that the girls’ were in a better place. He said while they may be faced with many questions they have to trust in God’s will and remember that the emotional upheaval they will experience is natural.

Gill’s funeral will take place today at the St Paul’s Anglican Church, Harris Promenade, San Fernando, from 10 am.
