Saraki contended that there are certain persons within the executive who have taken control of the machinery of government from President Buhari and are deploying same to further their personal interests, one of which includes persecuting him (Saraki).
In a series of tweets on Monday evening from his personal and verified account, Saraki maintained that leaders of the Nigerian senate were innocent of the charges filed against them by the attorney-general of the federation on behalf of the federal government.
.
charges filed by AGF represents violation of principle of Separation of Powers btw Executive & Legislative as enshrined in our Constitution.
These trumped up charges is only another phase in relentless persecution of the leadership of @NGRSenate Senate that started over a year ago
At a time when govt should be working together to meet Nigeria’s many challenges, executive is more concerned about Election btw Senators
Executive Needs to move beyond a leadership election among Senate peers. Wasn't an election of Senate peers & Executive Branch participants
He lamented that at a time the various arms of government ought to be working in unity to advance the development of the nation, the AGF is spearheading repeated attacks by the executive on the leadership of the legislature.
The embattled senate president urged members of the executive to move on from the acrimony that greeted the controversial national assembly leadership elections in June 2015. He added that the executive needed to settle with the fact that the election was between legislative peers and not between senate peers and an executive branch of participants.
In a statement published on his personal website, Saraki stated that he would always overcome the many challenges brought his way. He added that he was ready to defend the integrity of the senate even if it meant the loss of his personal freedom.
If yielding to the nefarious agenda of a few individuals who are bent in undermining our democracy and destabilising the Federal government to satisfy their selfish interests is the alternative to losing my personal freedom, let the doors of jails be thrown open and I shall be a happy guest,” Saraki said.
