Man who identified 'Boston bombers' and lost both legs is appealing for help with soaring medical costs - as thousands of dollars in donations pour in for other maimed victims

A man hailed as a hero of the Boston bombings who had lost both legs in the blast is now facing a pile of medical bills, but thanks to the power of the web, he will not be left in a lurch.
Jeff Bauman, 27, who was depicted in the now-iconic and extremely graphic picture being carried away from the scene of the explosion with his legs severed below the knee, helped police identify the suspects in the attack, one of whom looked him in the eye just before the bombs went off.
Although the 27-year-old victim is covered by medical insurance from his employer, Costco, his treatment and rehabilitation are expected to be both lengthy and costly.
Every dollar counts: Friends of Jeff Bauman (pictured center) have raised more than $330,000 on the crowdfunding site gofundme.com to help cover his medical expenses

Eager to help Bauman, his friends set up an online funding campaign in his honor called Bucks for Bauman on the crowdfunding site gofundme.com, hoping to raise $1million to cover the costs of his surgery and other medical expenses.
Since the page went live Tuesday, more than 8,200 people have donated over $334,000 towards Bauman's care.
'We have created this fundraiser to raise money to help support our dear friend, Jeff and his family,’ the page states. ‘As most of you know, Jeff was severely affected by the tragedy that had taken place at the Patriots Day Boston Marathon this year.
‘Throughout this difficult time we want to help in every which way we possibly can to get Bauman back on track as soon as possible.’
‘Medical bills are going to start rolling in, let's get a head start on helping out Bauman and his family!’ it adds. ‘Every dollar counts!!’
The cost of treating the bombing survivors’ injuries is expected to exceed $9million, according to some estimates.

Key witness: After waking up in the hospital, Bauman asked for pen and paper and wrote down that he saw a man with a bag who looked him in the eye just before the explosions

According to ThinkProgress.org, the 27-year-old man was working part time at Costco Wholesale Corp. and planned to go back to school.
When Bauman regained consciousness in Boston Medical Center after the bombing, his brother told Bloomberg he asked for a pen and paper and wrote, 'bag, saw the guy, looked right at me,' referring to one of the suspected bombers identified as Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev.
Like nearly 98 per cent of Massachusetts resident, Bauman is fortunate enough to have health insurance to help cover his medical bills, but his employer, Costco Wholesale Corp., is also matching donations made by colleagues at the chain’s Nashua location, The Boston Globe reported.
Like his friends, executives at Costco rallied around Bauman, agreeing to match donations made by his colleagues at the chain’s Nashua store where the 27-year-old has been employed for more than three years.
Friends to the rescue: Bauman's co-workers at Costco have been donating money to help him, and the company has agreed to match the donations

‘What is important is that he is covered and will be taken care of,’ said Bob Nelson, a Costco executive.
Co-workers have been raising money for him since Monday. The retailer has also permitted the store’s general manager, Kevin Horst, to spend the week helping Bauman’s family.
Horst secured three parking spots for Bauman’s relatives outside the hospital where the 27-year-old man is being treated and collected gift certificate donations from various merchants in the South End.
A similar effort has raised more than $400,000 for Celeste Corcoran and her daughter Sydney, who were severely injured in the attack.
Among the donors was comedian Chelsea Handler, who gave $25,000. The mother and daughter also got a visit at the hospital from actor Bradley Cooper.

One world: one gigantic market place. This year, 63 countries have Global 2000 entries vs 51 in our inaugural list in 2004. Forbes Global 2000 are the biggest, most powerful listed companies in the world. Our justification for using a composite ranking is simple: One metric alone can give a false impression about corporate size. Our ranking of the world’s biggest companies departs from lopsided lists based on a single metric, like sales. Instead we use an equal weighting of sales, profits, assets and market value to rank companies according to size.

What’s wrong if OPC gets NNPC pipeline security contract?—Gani Adams

The National Coordinator of the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Chief Gani Adams, speaks with CHUCKS OKPARAOCHA on sundry issues. Excerpts:

Did your faction of OPC also bid for the N2bn NNPC (Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation) pipeline protection contract allegedly awarded to Dr Frederick Fasehun?
We got the information from the internet too. It was not only Dr Fasehun that bade for the contract, we did too. You know, our organisation has a security antecedent, and the existence of the group has security advantage, so, we thought it was necessary to be involved in securing pipelines against vandalism. If you know the number of lives that have been lost to pipeline vandalism, especially in Lagos and Ogun states, you will realise the seriousness of what we are talking about. For example, about six years ago at Abule Egba, about 2,000 people died in the process of pipeline vandalism. At Imore, nearly 1,000 people died with the corpses floating on water. The same thing happened in Ijedodo and most recently at Arepo. Part of the duties of OPC is to secure life and property. We believe that for an organisation like NNPC not to constitute a security threat to the society, there is the need for its pipelines to be secured.

Controversy: Posing semi-nude for a New York based magazine: Adokiye opens up. (CAUTION: SOME MEN MAY FIND PICTURES EXCITING)

Until early this year when she posed semi-nude for a New York based magazine, Adokiye Kyrian Yvonne a.k.a Adokiye is relatively unknown in the nation's music scene. But immediately after that controversial posture, the sexy singer has become one of the hottest rising female singers in the country. Our reporter caught up with her recently in Lagos, where she speaks on the raunchy photo spread among other issues.
How did you delve into music ?
During my university days, I was a member of a minor musical group called the "MASE" comprising of four young talents. We used the first alphabet of their names to coin out the name, "MASE". My exploits with the group helped to expose me as well as sharpen my musical skills to a great extent.
Music for me is something I've always wanted to do. I just wanted the right time to get into it and I believe this is the right time.
Early this year, you posed semi-nude in a New York based magazine. What was the attraction?
It actually got leaked. I did some modelling jobs while I was in New York and at that point in time, some pictures leaked while the process was still going on. Yes, I posed for some shots, but I never really posed nude. I didn't expose my private part as a woman. That I exposed my skin doesn't mean I posed nude. I am an architect by training and creativity is part of my daily routine. So, I didn't pose nude because I didn't expose my private part.

They cost from £10 to £620 - but can you tell which is which? Modelling legend and shoe addict Jilly Johnson tried... and fell flat on her face

SOURCE: Daily Mail
Just as alcoholics hide bottles, I hide shoes. I’ve got more than 200 pairs crammed into spare bedrooms, stuffed under sofas and peeking out of cupboards at my Hertfordshire home. There’s no other way to say it: I’m a shoe addict.
The obsession began when I started out as a model in the 1970s and found that, at 5ft 8in in my stockinged feet, all the other girls towered over me.
I bought myself a pair of Biba wedges — and I never took them off. I’ve barely been out of heels since.
I progressed from wedges to the pointed stilettos of the 1980s, the strappy Jimmy Choos of the 1990s, and now, at 59 years old, to (marginally) more sensible platform heels.
Yet while my capacity to stand for hours in towering stilettos may have diminished with age, I’m confident that my ability to spot, at 20 paces, the difference between a pair of Manolo Blahniks and Matalan’s finest is as sharp as ever.
And while I love designer heels, I love a bargain even more! So when the Mail gave me a very special challenge, I couldn’t resist.
With so many brilliant copycat styles flooding the High Street, would I be able to guess which of these red heels cost £600 and which just £10? And can you? All the labels were removed or covered when I tried them...

Without evangelization Church becomes babysitter, Pope warns

If Catholics do not proclaim Jesus with their lives, then the Church becomes “not the mother, but the babysitter,” Pope Francis cautioned in a homily and a separate letter to his brother bishops in Argentina.

When believers share their faith, “the Church becomes a mother church that produces children (and more) children, because we, the children of the Church, we carry that. But when we do not, the Church is not the mother, but the babysitter, that takes care of the baby – to put the baby to sleep. It is a Church dormant,” Pope Francis stated.

Shocker: British Couple Tries to Smuggle Nigerian Baby Into UK

UK - A couple from Barton were caught trying to smuggle a Nigerian baby into Britain.
Simon Heap, 47, and Gladys Effa-Heap, 52, were given a suspended jail sentence on Tuesday after admitting facilitating a breach of immigration law.
A Border Force spokesman said the couple had travelled to Nigeria and went to the British High Commission in Lagos to apply for a passport for a baby girl.
They claimed Mrs Effa-Heap had given birth within days of them arriving in Africa.
They produced a birth certificate but that was found to be bogus, and DNA tests proved the baby was not related to them.
