The embattled leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers
(NURTW), Oyo State Chapter, Alhaji Lateef Akinsola, popularly known as
Tokyo, regained his freedom on Thursday evening following his arrest the
previous day by the State Criminal Investigation Department.
Though details of the bail conditions were patchy as at press time,
the acting Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, Mr
Ayodele Lanade, gave confirmation of his release on bail by the state
police CID on Thursday evening.
Tokyo and his rival, Alhaji Mukaila Lamidi, popularly known as
Auxiliary, had been declared wanted by the police since last year, after
the leadership tussle resulted in crises by members of the union which
led to the deaths of many innocent people in the state.
In an effort to douse the tension caused by the union members, the
Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi appointed a 14-member caretaker
committee led by Alhaji Taofeek Oyerinde, popularly called Fele, to take
charge of the affairs of the union.
However, last week, the government raised the alarm that the rival groups of the union were planning to stir up trouble.
As a result, the Police Commissioner, Mr Joseph Mbu, invited the two leaders to the police headquarters at Eleyele.
Tokyo, who is enjoying an upper hand from the National Industrial
Court and the Federal High Court over his removal from office and who
has been pressing for reinstatement, honoured the invitation, but to his
shock, he was promptly arrested.
It was gathered that Tokyo remained at Eleyele until the afternoon of
Wednesday when he was taken to the Iyaganku Police Station where he
was made to write a statement.
