Executive Guilty Of Date Rape After Slipping Drug Into Drink Of Woman He Met

Businessman John Campbell has been found guilty of spiking the woman's drink with ecstasy in the back garden at his home before having sex with her. The finance director date raped the air stewardess he met on a dating website MillionaireMatch after he slipped drugs into her glass of wine.

The air stewardess had struck up a relationship with 65-year-old Campbell after meeting him online on the exclusive dating site that matches "successful singles and admirers".

But she told police she "lost" several hours after having memory blackouts and being violently sick after having the drug secretly dropped in her drink.

Campbell told a friend that he liked having sex with women who had taken drugs because the effects "left them screaming for more," but insisted the sex had been consensual and that the woman had instigated it.

However the jury of six men and six women today did not believe his version of events and found him guilty of rape and administering a substance with intent to overpower or allow sexual activity.

The incident took place in the back garden of Campbell's Buckinghamshire home on June 14 last year, the court heard.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had been drinking wine in Campbell's when she became ill after Campbell topped up her glass.

Divorcee Campbell, who had previously been married for 30 years, tried to convince the air stewardess that she had a bad case of food poisoning, the jury was told.

However she told police that her pupils became dilated and she could not stop herself from clenching her teeth - a side effect of taking MDMA, or ecstasy, jurors were told.

Worried at her symptoms the woman went to have blood and urine tests, knowing she would get into trouble at work if she failed a random drugs test.

Days later, after she made a complaint to police, tests revealed MDMA had been in her system around the time of the alleged incident.

When interviewed by police she confessed to having large periods where she could not account for what had happened to her, before she remembered some of the events in a series of flashbacks.

The pair had been involved in a healthy consensual sexual relationship for some six months before the attack.

Alisdair Smith, prosecuting, told the court: "The prosecution argue that he gave her MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, without her knowledge and, whilst she was stupefied by the drug, he had sex with her without consent.

"Because she was not used to the drug it made her violently sick. This made her realise something was wrong.

"If she had her ability to consent to sex taken away from her by the drug then having sex in these circumstances is rape."

Campbell - a frequent user of cannabis who also took cocaine when away on golf holidays with pals - had insisted that the woman had instigated the sex they went on to have.

Summing the case up to the jury at Amersham Crown Court, Judge Karen Holt said: "He said that she started becoming passionate. She wanted a cuddle and come forward and kissed him on the lips. He hadn't thought there would be any sexual passion."

Campbell, of Upper Meadow, Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, was found guilty of one count of rape and one count of administering a substance with intent to overpower or allow sexual activity.

He was acquitted of a further count of rape and will be sentenced on December 18.
