How a Man Battered His Wife’s Niece for Using Air Conditioner (PHOTOS)

Last Friday, Latifat Adeyemi, 27, was allegedly battered by her uncle-in-law, Rasak Alabi, at Aga in Ikorodu. Alabi allegedly hit her with a spanner on her head and face, which went viral after a family friend, Francis Ibirinde, shared pictures of the injured woman on Facebook.

In a telephone interview with Punch, Latifat said that trouble started after she got home on Friday night and discovered that the Air Conditioner in her room had been removed. Her words: “My aunt is a nurse and she is based in the US. She put her mother in the house and asked me to cater to her.

Grandma and I had been living in that house for over 10 years. Alfa (Alabi) and my aunt separated over 20 years ago. They never had a child together. But last year, they reconciled and the family said we needed a man in the house; so he moved into the house.

He evicted our last born, but I stayed behind because of grandma. Last week Friday, when I returned from Surulere around 7pm, I saw that he had broken into my apartment and removed the AC there. He said the AC consumed too much power.

I was angry. I picked my phone and called my sister, telling her that I have had it. That I don’t think I can continue staying in the house. I was still outside talking to my sister on phone, when the man from nowhere, hit me with spanner from behind. He said I was making noise.

That was how he continued hitting me with the iron. I was bleeding but he didn’t care. When he was satisfied, he went inside. I went to the Police Station to report the incident. The operatives who followed me to the house met the gate locked. They turned back when they could not gain entrance."

After the post went viral, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, ordered Alabi's arrest. He was arrested in his hideout in Ikorodu around 1.30pm today. He struggled with the officials, but he has been arrested and the case transferred to the command headquarters.
